Swim Lessons

The American Red Cross Learn to Swim program is designed to help children and adults of all ages and abilities swimming and water safety skills. The Learn to Swim program at the Ouray Hot Springs will be offering 6 levels of swim instruction during the 2015 Summer season. The following course descriptions outline the main teaching objectives for each level of the American Red Cross program. While there are recommended age ranges for each level, other factors such as a maturity level and prior experience in the water weigh just as heavily. Level Descriptions

Parent and Tot

The emphasis is on water safety for the parent and water readiness for the child through fun and games. Recommended Ages: 2-4

Level 1-Introduction to Water Skills

The objectives of Level 1 are to learn basic personal water safety information and skills to help participants feel comfortable and safe in the water. In this class students will learn: Entering and exiting the water, submerging their mouth, nose and eyes, breath control, floating on the front and back, treading water, arm and leg actions and water safety. Use of a lifejacket is included. Recommended Ages: 4-5

Level 2-Fundamental Water Skills

The objective of Level 2 is to give participants success with fundamental skills. Students learn to float without support and to recover to a vertical position. This level is the true beginning to learn how to move through the water by developing simultaneous and alternating arm and leg actions on the front and back. This class lays the foundation for future strokes. Water safety continues to be addressed. Recommended Ages: 5-6

Level 3-Stroke Development

The objective of Level 3 is to build on previously learned skills by providing additional guided practice. New kicks and strokes will be introduced including scissors and dolphin kicks, elementary backstroke and treading water. This class will also introduce head first entries into the water. Recommended Ages: 6-7

Level 4-Stroke Improvement

The objectives of Level 4 are to develop participants confidence in the strokes learned thus far and to improve other water skills. Students improve their skills and increase their endurance by swimming familiar strokes (front crawl, elementary backstroke) for greater distances. Students also add the arms to the scissors kick for the sidestroke. Back crawl, breaststroke and butterfly will be introduced as well as the basics of turning at a wall. Recommended Ages: 7-9

Level 5-Stroke Refinement

The objectives of this level are coordination and refinement of strokes. Students refine their performance of all the strokes (front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, elementary backstroke and sidestroke) and increase their distances. Flip turns on the front and back are introduced. Recommended Ages: 10-12
