Interacts with the public to assist in the safe and orderly enjoyment of swimming area activities; performs lifesaving and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation techniques whenever needed; participates in physical and rescue skills training.
Lifeguard Certification Classes
Description: This is a 25 hour lifeguard certification course through the American Red Cross. All class participants will receive lifeguard, CPR, First Aid, Oxygen Administration, Epinepherine Injection, Asthma Inhaler and Bloodborne Pathogen certification. Certifications are valid for 2 years.
Class Dates: Lifeguard certification classes are typically held in April/May and August/September.
Cost: $110. This includes study materials and certificate. Certification is FREE for Ouray, Ridgway and Montrose high school students interested in employment.
Application: Certification classes are for participants seeking to become a Ouray Hot Springs Lifeguard. To apply, please fill out and submit an online employment application.
Invitation: Potential candidates will be called for interviews. Applicants that possess the qualities and values of Ouray Hot Springs caliber will be invited to take our skills assessment prior to taking our lifeguard certification class. You must pass the skills assessment to take the certification class.
- Must be 15 years old on or before the final scheduled day of the course
- Swim 300 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both
- Tread water for 2 minutes without using hands
- Swim 20 yards, then surface dive, feet first, to a depth of 7 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. Return to the surface and and swim 20 yards to the starting point with both hands holding the object on the chest above the water.
Certification: The Ouray Hot Springs Pool offers 2 types of certification courses
Blended Learning Course: This course combines online knowledge acquisition and in-water skills training. Participants will be required to complete the online portion of the class before the first day of in-water skills training.
Traditional Course: All material, skills training and testing is performed in a group setting. There are no online components in this course.
